Athletics and Student Clubs and Organizations


 

Athletics

 

The Erie Community College Kats have one of the most diversified junior college athletic programs within the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). SUNY Erie offers varsity programs for men and women in basketball, bowling, cross country, soccer, swimming & diving, as well as men’s baseball, football and ice hockey and women’s softball, lacrosse, volleyball and cheerleading. The students’ athletic fees support all Athletic Department activities and home athletic events are open to SUNY Erie students free of charge with valid student ID. Review the Standards of Eligibility  in the College Policies Section  of this catalog for more information on athletic participation. Students interested in participating on an SUNY Erie varsity program should contact the Athletic Department office at their respective campus, or visit www.ecc.edu to learn more about these exciting intercollegiate athletic opportunities.

Athletic Activities
 

Intercollegiate
 

As a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), Region III and the Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC), SUNY Erie teams compete against two-year and four-year institutions throughout the United States and are considered to be among the finest junior college programs in the nation. The College’s teams have won numerous WNYAC titles: 130 Region III and 56 NJCAA Championships since 1948, with the most recent NJCAA Championship in men’s ice hockey in 2014-2015, a NJCAA Runners Up in women’s soccer in 2016, and a NJCAA Runners Up in men’s ice hockey in 2016-2017.

Recreational/Leisure Offerings
 

The Athletic Department provides SUNY Erie students with the opportunity to pursue recreational and leisure activities such as basketball, physical fitness, walking, jogging, swimming, etc. Individual students and groups may explore a wide variety of activities made possible through the utilization of indoor and outdoor athletic facilities at all three SUNY Erie campuses. Students are encouraged to participate in any number of recreational/leisure activities to help them determine the type of activities they may wish to continue throughout their lives. For more information, students should contact the Athletic Department office at their respective campus.

Facilities
 

All athletic facilities, based on availability, are provided for SUNY Erie students to use with college ID cards.
 

City Campus
 

The Burt Flickinger Athletic Center, located next to City Campus, houses an Olympic-size swimming pool, a 25-meter warm-up pool, three regulation basketball courts, a field house which seats 3,000, an indoor jogging track, wellness center, men’s and women’s locker room, shower facilities, classrooms, and Athletic Department offices.

 

North Campus

The North Campus Bell Sports Center includes a wellness center, gymnasium, computer lab, classrooms, men’s and women’s locker rooms, shower facilities and Athletic Department offices. Outdoor facilities include numerous soccer fields, along with a baseball and softball diamond.

 

South
 

Outdoor athletic facilities include West Herr Stadium and two varsity soccer fields. Inside building 6, there is a gymnasium and weight room. Locker rooms and shower facilities are also available.
 

Student Clubs and Organizations
 

Membership in a student club is open to all currently enrolled SUNY Erie students regardless of sex, disability, race or creed. It is not based on any action or situation which recklessly or intentionally endangers mental or physical health or involves the forced consumption of liquor or drugs. Officers of a student club must meet the eligibility guidelines outlined by the college, and other criteria as established by the constitution of the club. Student Organizations
 

Alpha Beta Gamma


Alpha Beta Gamma, an International Business Honor Society, has been organized for the purpose of honoring business students for their outstanding academic achievement. This society is recognized nationwide as playing a key role in the identification of top students in the area of business.

Membership in Alpha Beta Gamma is offered to eligible students in the Business Department who have attained a 3.3 or higher grade point average and completed a minimum of 12 credit hours.
 

Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society
 

Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society was formed to recognize the academic achievements of students admitted to colleges and universities through non- traditional criteria or those who utilize developmental and educational support services. Its purpose is to promote exceptional academic standards, foster increased communication among its members, and honor academic excellence of those students admitted to college via special admissions programs.

Membership in Chi Alpha Epsilon is offered through local campus chapters to eligible students. Students who hold a 3.0 cumulative grade point average for two consecutive full-time semesters (or for three or four consecutive part-time semesters) and were admitted to the college/university via developments or higher educational opportunity programs are eligible for membership.
 

Phi Theta Kappa
 

Phi Theta Kappa’s mission is two-fold: To recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students; and to provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.

Annually, approximately 100,000 students are inducted into Phi Theta Kappa. To be eligible for membership a student must complete a minimum of 12 hours of associate degree course work and generally earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Students must maintain a high academic standing throughout their enrollment in the two-year college, generally a 3.25 GPA.
