Workforce Development

Workforce Development provides customized non-credit professional development training to local businesses, individual community residents and local government employees. For more than 30 years, Workforce Development has complemented Erie Community College's academic mission and has positioned itself as the workforce development leader in Western New York.

Workforce Development's four divisions--Community Education, Corporate Training, Driving Programs, and the SUNY Erie One Stop have created an innovative entrepreneurial workforce team assisting local businesses in remaining globally competitive in a growing technological and knowledge-driven economy.

The reason for Workforce Development's success is largely attributed to the development of partnerships, strategic alliances with the community and collaborative relationships working with local, regional and federal government. Courses are customized, short-term, non-credit professional development programs that meet business and industry training needs. These non-credit professional development classes are offered on-site, held at any one of our three conveniently located campuses, or provided through off site by trainers with expertise in a myriad of non-credit topics.

Through workforce training, SUNY Erie plays a critical role in both state and regional economic development efforts. Workforce Development provides a life-long learning partnership between education and industry. The mission statement for this department is the following:

Driver Safety Programs

Programs focus on each individual driver's responsibility to interact lawfully within the traffic system to create and maintain a safe environment for all drivers. The curriculum emphasizes personal accountability, awareness of laws and how they impact the whole community, and is designed specifically for the different needs and types of drivers residing in the community.

The Driver Safety Program is one the largest providers of safety training in New York State with more than 30 years of experience in delivering services to the judicial courts and substance abuse agencies, as well as safety to community residents. The department offers the following training programs driven by market demand:

  • NYS Point and Insurance Reduction Program: This six-hour course is offered in partnership with Western New York AAA and is open to the public and local businesses. Benefits include a 10 percent reduction on liability and collision insurance and/or four points off driving record. Participants can register and pay online or, mail or fax in their registration form.   See the website https://www.ecc.edu/driving-programs/
  • NYS Five-Hour Pre-licensing Program: This five-hour pre-licensing driver safety course, offered in partnership with Western New York AAA , is necessary for any driver applying for a driver's license in New York State who has not completed a driver education course.
  • Driver Improvement Program (DIP): This three-hour course is available through the court for drivers with a moving violation. Major changes in NYS law regarding texting, cell phone use, and DWI are all covered along with emphasis on speeding, distracted driving, and drowsy driving. ECC's program presents the Highway Safety system with the driver as a part of that community and motivates the driver to behave prudently and law abidingly on the road for the safety of all drivers. Over 60 courts in Western New York courts use our program. Participants can register online or mail or fax in their registration form.
  • iDrive 3-Hour For Traffic Violators Ages 16 To 25: This three-hour court mandated program is for drivers who are ages 16 through 25. Drivers in this age group view driving and the car as a social extension of themselves and feel invulnerable to the myriad of risks associated with the driving task. Differs from the Driver Improvement Program in using current technology to engage the younger audience and in its emphasis on the high risk-taking behaviors of the youthful driver including texting, cell phone use, and distracted driving. Participants can register and pay online or, mail or fax in their registration form.
  • New York State Impaired Driver Program (IDP): SUNY Erie partners with NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, Erie County Auto Bureau and Prevention Research Institute to offer this 16-hour program for persons convicted with DWI, DWAI and ADWI. The PRIME For Life® curriculum is an evidence-based motivational program specifically designed for people who may be making high-risk choices. It is designed to change drinking and drug use behaviors by changing beliefs, attitudes, risk perceptions, motivations, and the knowledge of how to reduce a person's risk of alcohol and drug related problems throughout her/his lives. This program is part of New York's effort to reduce both the personal and property losses caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
