Credit Hours: 3

The latest generation drugs for disease detection and therapy have been produced as recombinant proteins expressed in mammalian cells. The course covers the common activities undertaken by industry for the production of mammalian therapeutics. Students will become familiar with workflows and terminology involved in biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • describe the general stages of mammalian recombinant protein production;
  • demonstrate an understanding of aseptic processing requirements for cell culture laboratory work in biotechnology;
  • identify and recognize standard operating procedures and batch documentation similar to that used in industry;
  • recognize and operate standard equipment utilized in biotechnology;
  • demonstrate an understanding of standard protein assay’s utilized in biotechnology;
  • describe the strategies used to generate and recover recombinant proteins; and
  • review and analyze case studies of typical products developed in the biotechnology industry.
