CH 143 - Lab for CH 142

Credit Hours: 1.5

Continuation of CH 141. Topics covered: solutions, acid and base titration, redox analysis, pH indicators, introduction to organic compounds and qualitative analysis of transition metal cations.

Course Outcomes
At the completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • apply the mole concept in chemistry to count molecules and solve stoichiometric problems;
  • convert molecular formulae to % compositions and % compositions to molecular formulae;
  • correct gas volumes for changes in pressure and temperature;
  • determine the concentration of solutes in unknown solutions;
  • determine the end-points in acid-base titrations;
  • properly use volumetric glassware to maximize precision of measurement;
  • balance equations for redox and nuclear reactions;
  • recognize and classify organic and biochemical compounds by knowledge of their functional groups;
  • apply proper technique for separating the components of a mixture by various chemical and physical methods;
  • determine pH of solutions using acid-base indicators and pH meter; and
  • use reference materials from library and/or websites to find values for physical properties of organic and inorganic compounds.
