DH 121 - Lab for DH 120


Credit Hours: 1

This laboratory course provides practical application of knowledge gained in DH 120. Using training manikins, emphasis is placed on the paralleling technique of taking dental radiographs using film positioning devices such as XCP instruments and Stabe film holders. Film processing methods, film mounting, basic interpretation and self-evaluation of technique and processing errors are practiced. Techniques will include film based imaging as well as digital methods using phosphor storage plates and direct sensor technology. Radiation safety for patient and clinician will be stressed. Minimum passing grade is “C-.”

Course Outcomes
At the completion of the course, the student should be able to demonstrate competency in the following areas:

  • identify and utilize equipment designed for safe use of ionizing radiation;
  • identify parts of the dental x-ray unit and digital radiography components used to produce dental images;
  • place, expose and process a complete set of intraoral films, utilizing a variety of films and film holding devices;
  • mount dental films using the ADA accepted method;
  • produce a complete set of intraoral images while utilizing digital radiography;
  • identify and correct technique, processing errors and artifacts;
  • perform quality assurance tests and document results as it pertains to equipment, film handling, and processing; and
  • demonstrate knowledge of the care and maintenance of dental x-ray equipment and digital radiography components.
