ML 128 - Clinical Rotation Phlebotomy


Credit Hours: 2

This off-campus course provides the opportunity to gain practical experience in the collection of clinical samples at designated clinical sites.  Emphasis is placed on actual performance of procedures using techniques and skills learned during the on-campus aspect of this course.  Students are supervised and instructed at the clinical sites by clinical faculty.  They must successfully interact with patients, health care professionals, exhibit professional and ethical behavior and complete the rotation in order to complete the course requirements and the on-campus course (ML 127).

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • perform a minimum of 25 venipunctures per site on patients at scheduled hospital/clinical sites;
  • adhere to proper techniques and NCCLS and CLSI standards for specimen collection;
  • follow routine venipuncture and specimen handling instruction;
  • follow facility safety standards, protocols, and privacy policies;
  • demonstrate ethical and professional behavior;
  • arrive at the site in a timely fashion, follow call in procedure for absence and work cooperatively with personnel; and
  • take the NAHP (National Association for Health Professionals) phlebotomy credentialing examination.


Prerequisites: MA 115 or BI 147 or permission of the instructor. Completion of the Health Science Health Report Form. Annual PPD and Influenza vaccine records are required.
