CO 240 - Construction Surveying

Credit Hours: 3

A combination lecture and lab involving surveying as applied to construction. Includes boundary and building layout, computation of horizontal and vertical curves, topography and contours, site grading and computation of earth work volumes.

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • improve ability to function as a member of a survey party in completing the assigned field work;
  • communicate verbally during outdoor laboratory exercise and record field measurements and other date in the manner common to the surveying profession;
  • gain the ability to measure differences in elevation and linear distance by stadia methods;
  • plotting of topographic data;
  • contouring;
  • understand and preform building construction layout including:  Building setbacks, offset hubs, grade stakes, basic stakeout, radial stakeout;
  • understand and calculate principle elements of a horizontal curve (T, L, LC, E) if R and  Δ are known;
  • calculate stations, deflection angles and chords to stakeout a horizontal curve from the PC;
  • calculate slopes and grades;
  • understand and calculate principle elements of a vertical curve;
  • calculate elevations at full or partial stations if PVI station and elevation, curve length, and grades are given;
  • understand the differences among plan data, profile data and cross-section data used in construction surveys for routes;
  • develop a profile of existing and proposed ground along a baseline;
  • develop cross-sections of existing and proposed ground at major points along a baseline;
  • calculate volumes for earthwork by grid method and average end area method; and
  • create computer solutions for common surveying problems utilizing computer software.
