EN 230 - World Literature


Credit Hours: 3

A course designed to assist the student in under­standing and appreciating how the cultural, historical, and political backgrounds of writers can influence their work. Emphasis will be placed on modern fiction, poetry, and drama from both the Eastern and Western worlds.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • demonstrate, through class discussion and written work, an ability to critically assess selected texts from a variety of historical periods and global regions in relation to historical, cultural, philosophical, and literary contexts;
  • demonstrate, through class discussion and written work, an understanding of the importance of selected texts from a variety of historical periods and global regions to diversity in the humanities;
  • demonstrate, through class discussion and written work, an ability to examine the ways in which literary techniques such as allusions (historical, political, etc.) and figures of speech are employed in selected texts from a variety of historical periods and global regions; and
  • demonstrate, through class discussion and written work, an understanding of the value of diversity and individual difference in an environment where individuals of different cultures, intellectual positions, and lifestyles can reach their full potential through the promotion of mutual respect and cross-cultural understanding.
