EN 260 - Studies in Poetry


Credit Hours: 3

A course designed to build the student’s skill as a reader of poetry and to acquaint the student with important works and writers in the genre, with emphasis on poetic conven­tions and poetic form.

Fulfills the following SUNY General Education categories:

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • use and define terminology relevant to the genre of poetry;
  • demonstrate, through written work and class discussion, a knowledge of the historical evolution of the techniques and themes of poetry;
  • demonstrate, through written work and class discussion, an ability to analyze a poem through the conventions and methods of the humanities;
  • demonstrate, through written work and class discussion, and understanding of a variety of poetic forms and the interrelatedness of content and form in a given poetic work;
  • demonstrate, through written work and class discussion, an understanding of the major literary techniques employed in poetry;
  • demonstrate, through written scansion and/or written analysis, an understanding of basic prosody; and
  • demonstrate, through written work and class discussion, the ability to form educated arguments about quality in the genre.
