EN 121 - Composition and Readings in Science and Literature


Credit Hours: 3

Technical and humanistic readings will be subject matter for analysis in discussion and oral and written reports. The course will examine critically the relationship between the individual and science and technology.

Fulfills SUNY General Education – Basic Communication.

Course Outcomes
At the completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • construct a formal essay; that is, I t declares a. discernible thesis, and it exhibits a logical, unified, and coherent development of that thesis;
  • demonstrate.critical skills and apply them in written argumentative form, and in clear plain language;
  • prepare a research report based on at least three different sources and demonstrate competence with Library resources, manuscript form, and an accepted documentation style (MLA, APA);
  • demonstrate accurate application of grammar;
  • discuss the impact of technological change of the environment, culture, language, and man; included in this discussion the student should be able to outline the ideas of at least six authors and authorities who have dealt with the phenomenon; and
  • formulate and make an oral presentation in which they demonstrate how something works or how a task is accomplished. This objective should exhibit the students’ skill with the use of pertinent devices, props, tools, and visual aids.


Prerequisites: EN 110 or EN 120 or permission of the instructor.
