In an increasingly complex world of changing technologies, increasing emergencies situations, and budget crises, the fire protection professionals working to save lives, protect property and making a safer place to live must not only have the knowledge and skills in fire suppression and prevention, management and administration, manpower utilization, personnel development, and leadership but also be skilled in prevention, protection, response, command and investigation of fire and related emergency incidents including natural and technological disasters, acts of terrorism, and cyber-attacks, whether potential or actual. The objectives of the program are to:
- promote effective firefighting strategies;
- develop qualities of leadership necessary in fire administration and supervision
- provide the fire protection professional with a comprehensive background and updated information in the area of fire prevention and protection, with an emphasis on the management and administration of large and small fires; and
- comprehensive knowledge and application of fire codes and standards and the legal implication of the fire services.
The Fire Protection Technology Program curriculum is comprehensive. The program prepares the students with the knowledge and strategic managerial skills necessary to prevent, respond, command and investigate any fire, large or small, using the latest techniques of firefighting and fire prevention. Lectures, demonstrations, field trips and discussions will lead the student through the basics of fire protection equipment and building construction, radiological theory, grant writing, fire investigations, handling of hazardous materials, and handling terrorist situations. Fire operations strategy gives the students an opportunity to utilize all the acquired skills and to improve them through the information acquired in the management and leadership courses.
The Fire Protection Technology Program core courses and general education requirement courses prepare the students for the challenges of modern day fir fighting operations and activities. Students graduating from this program are prepared to pursue a baccalaureate degree in Fire Administration, Fire Protection Engineering, Public Safety, and Public Administration or in any other related field. Our Fire Protection Program has transfer possibilities at several universities and colleges inside as well as outside the United States.
Our graduates are qualified and prepared to accept leadership positions in governmental agencies and in non-governmental organizations. Opportunities for Fire Protection Technology graduates exist today in government at the local, county, state and federal levels as fire officers, chiefs, marshals, arson investigators and safety officers in both the public and private sectors. Additionally, employment opportunities for Fire Protection Technology graduates exist in the chemical and nuclear industries, utilities, educational institutions, retail and Insurance companies.
Upon graduation with the Associate in Applied Science degree in Fire Protection Technology, the graduate will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of fire protection and fire suppression by describing the various types of fire suppression systems and their component parts and applying the tactical and technical skills necessary to direct fire personnel in the performance of fire prevention, suppression and control activities;
- demonstrate a working knowledge of the responsibilities of Fire Service by determining the cause of fire, describing the principles of fire investigation, and listing the New York State laws and the criminal procedures regarding the fire service;
- demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the general and specific construction features of buildings by safely evaluate the effects of fire on various types of buildings. Respond to disasters involving hazardous materials by identifying the dangers of hazardous materials including radiological substances and conducting a risk analysis; and
- demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the internal workings of fire departments by listing and describing the principles of securing evidence at a fire scene, and of recordkeeping and documentation and the principles of leadership, supervision, and human resources management.
