Athletics and Student Clubs and Organizations


 

Athletics

 

The Erie Community College Kats have one of the most diversified junior college athletic programs within the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). ECC offers varsity programs for men and women in basketball, bowling, soccer, as well as men’s baseball, football and ice hockey and women’s softball, lacrosse, volleyball and cheerleading. The students’ athletic fees support all Athletic Department activities and home athletic events are open to ECC students free of charge will valid student ID. Review the Standards of Eligibility  in the College Policies Section  of this catalog for more information on athletic participation. Students interested in participating on an ECC varsity program should contact the Athletic Department office at their respective campus, or visit www.ecc.edu to learn more about these exciting intercollegiate athletic opportunities.

Athletic Activities
 

Intercollegiate
 

As a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), Region III and the Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC), ECC teams compete against two-year and four-year institutions throughout the United States and are considered to be among the finest junior college programs in the nation, winning many Conference, Region III and National Championships since 1948, with the most recent NJCAA Championships in 2010-2011 in men’s bowling and ice hockey and in 2013-2014 in women’s bowling.

Recreational/Leisure Offerings
 

The Athletic Department provides ECC students with the opportunity to pursue recreational and leisure activities such as basketball, physical fitness, walking, jogging, swimming, etc. Individual students and groups may explore a wide variety of activities made possible through the utilization of indoor and outdoor athletic facilities at all three ECC campuses. Students are encouraged to participate in any number of recreational/leisure activities to help them determine the type of activities they may wish to continue throughout their lives. For more information, students should contact the Athletic Department office at their respective campus.

Facilities
 

All athletic facilities, based on availability, are provided for ECC students to use with college ID cards.
 

City Campus
 

The Burt Flickinger Athletic Center, located next to City Campus, houses an Olympic-size swimming pool, a 25-meter warm-up pool, three regulation basketball courts, a field house which seats 3,000, an indoor jogging track, wellness center, men’s and women’s locker room, shower facilities, classrooms, and Athletic Department offices.

 

North Campus

The North Campus Bell Sports Center includes a wellness center, gymnasium, computer lab, classrooms, men’s and women’s locker rooms, shower facilities and Athletic Department offices. Outdoor facilities include numerous soccer fields, along with a baseball and softball diamond.

 

South
 

Outdoor athletic facilities includea grass field stadium and two varsity soccer fields. Inside building 6, there is a gymnasium and weight room. Locker rooms and shower facilities are also available.
 

Student Clubs and Organizations
 

Membership in a student club is open to all currently enrolled ECC students regardless of sex, disability, race or creed. It is not based on any action or situation which recklessly or intentionally endangers mental or physical health or involves the forced consumption of liquor or drugs. Officers of a student club must meet the eligibility guidelines outlined by the college, and other criteria as established by the constitution of the club. City Campus Clubs
 

Muslim & International Student Association
 

The purpose of this club is to educate non Muslim’s about the religion of Islam. Muslim students of ECC celebrate their holidays with other students.
 

North Campus Clubs
 

Dental Hygiene
 

The goal of the Dental Hygiene Club is to inform and educate the public in preventive dentistry and proper oral hygiene techniques by sharing information, e.g. visiting schools, nursing homes, or shipping malls. The club also gives students an opportunity to attend local and national ADHA functions.

 

Internationall Club

The goal of the International Club is to promote cultural diversity by integrating and socially connecting the international student population with the general population at ECC. The club gives students, faculty and staff an opportunity to attend and participate in events that promote cross-cultural engagement among all students through active involvement and leadership opportunities. It also provides our international students with a forum to find support and networking opportunities.

South Campus Clubs
 

Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER)
 

Education, experience and career guidance in the area of recreational studies are the main objectives of the HPER Club. Members are also affiliated with the Niagara Frontier Parks and Recreation Society. Conferences and group meetings, coupled with sponsoring various activities, enhance the student’s knowledge and views regarding the recreation field.


Student Organizations
 

Alpha Beta Gamma


Alpha Beta Gamma, an International Business Honor Society, has been organized for the purpose of honoring business students for their outstanding academic achievement. This society is recognized nationwide as playing a key role in the identification of top students in the area of business.

Membership in Alpha Beta Gamma is offered to eligible students in the Business Department who have attained a 3.3 or higher grade point average and completed a minimum of 12 credit hours.
 

Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society
 

Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society was formed to recognize the academic achievements of students admitted to colleges and universities through non- traditional criteria or those who utilize developmental and educational support services. Its purpose is to promote exceptional academic standards, foster increased communication among its members, and honor academic excellence of those students admitted to college via special admissions programs.

Membership in Chi Alpha Epsilon is offered through local campus chapters to eligible students. Students who hold a 3.0 cumulative grade point average for two consecutive full-time semesters (or for three or four consecutive part-time semesters) and were admitted to the college/university via developments or higher educational opportunity programs are eligible for membership.
 

College-wide Student Publications
 

Students publish a college-wide newspaper, the ECC Student Voice, throughout the academic year, as well as a literary magazine, Images. Collectively, student publications provide students with learning opportunities through the exploration and expression of issues and ideas. These publications provide the college community with a student’s perspective of events, issues and activities at the three campuses. In addition, these publications provide students with unique opportunities for personal and professional growth and development.

 


Phi Theta Kappa
 

Phi Theta Kappa’s mission is two-fold: To recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students; and to provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.

Annually, approximately 100,000 students are inducted into Phi Theta Kappa. To be eligible for membership a student must complete a minimum of 12 hours of associate degree course work and generally earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Students must maintain a high academic standing throughout their enrollment in the two-year college, generally a 3.25 GPA.
