Driver Safety Programs
Programs focus on each individual driver’s responsibility to interact lawfully within the traffic system to create and maintain a safe environment for all drivers. The curriculum emphasizes personal accountability, and awareness of laws and their impact on the whole community, and is designed specifically for the diverse needs and types of drivers residing in the community.
The Driver Safety Program is one the largest providers of safety training in New York State, with more than 30 years of experience in delivering services to the judicial courts and substance abuse agencies, as well as safety to community residents. The department offers the following training programs driven by market demand:
- NYS (New York State) Point and Insurance Reduction Program: This six-hour course is offered in partnership with Western New York AAA and is open to the public and local businesses. Benefits include a ten-percent reduction on liability and collision insurance and/or four points off driving record. Participants can register and pay online.
- NYS Driver Education Program: The Driver Education course, in partnership with Western New York AAA, is intended to educate students (age 16 or older) on appropriate driving skills and habits as well as playing a responsible role in the highway transportation/safety system. Course highlights include 27 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of behind-the-wheel training and observation. Students who satisfactorily complete the course are eligible to receive the MV-285: Student Certificate of Completion. The MV-285 Student Certificate of Completion allows a NYS Junior Permit holder to schedule a road test, young drivers to obtain a possible reduction in automobile insurance cost (participation is dependent upon insurance provider participation), and a 17-year-old to receive a senior license (MV-285 form must be submitted to local DMV to attain this benefit).
- NYS Five-Hour Pre-licensing Program: This five-hour pre-licensing driver safety course, offered in partnership with Western New York AAA, is necessary for any driver applying for a driver’s license in New York State who has not completed a driver education course.
- Driver Improvement Program (DIP): This three-hour course is available through the court for drivers with a moving violation. Major changes in NYS law regarding texting, cell phone use, and DWI are all covered along with emphasis on speeding, distracted driving, and drowsy driving. SUNY Erie’s program presents the Highway Safety system with the driver as a part of that community and motivates the driver to behave prudently and law-abidingly on the road for the safety of all drivers. Over 60 courts in Western New York courts use our program. Participants can register and pay online.
- iDrive Three Hour for Traffic Violators Ages 16 To 25: This three-hour court-mandated program is for drivers who are ages 16 through 25. Drivers in this age group view driving and the car as a social extension of themselves and feel invulnerable to the myriad of risks associated with the driving task. Differs from the Driver Improvement Program in using current technology to engage the younger audience and in its emphasis on the high-risk-taking behaviors of the youthful driver including texting, cell phone use, and distracted driving. Participants can register and pay online.
- New York State Impaired Driver Program (IDP): SUNY Erie partners with the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, Erie County Auto Bureau, and The Change Companies to offer this 16-hour program for persons convicted of DWI, DWAI, and ADWI. The curriculum is an evidence-based motivational program specifically designed for people who may be making high-risk choices. It is designed to change drinking and drug use behaviors by changing beliefs, attitudes, risk perceptions, motivations, and the knowledge of how to reduce a person’s risk of alcohol and drug-related problems throughout their life. This program is part of New York’s effort to reduce both the personal and property losses caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
