AR 250 - Applied Structural Design/Lab


Credit Hours: 3

A course dealing with the basic design principles for steel and concrete structural members utilizing handbook procedures in their selection and use.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:

  • analyze the strength of building materials;
  • understand and employ basic framing procedures used in commercial construction;
  • design basic wood and steel framing systems;
  • select concrete reinforcement to meet acceptable standards;
  • understand and draw some of the working drawings for a basic commercial steel frame structure;
  • identify and properly use Architectural graphic symbols, lines, cross-referencing, and vocabulary;
  • identify and properly use appropriate charts, tables, and reference materials necessary for proper design applications; and
  • apply necessary building codes.
