AT 213 - Introduction to Watercolor Painting


Credit Hours: 3

This course will introduce the student to watercolor painting with an emphasis on the fundamentals of composition, value, and color relationships. Students learn to control the medium of watercolor and produce watercolor paintings. This will be achieved in the spirit of individual growth and the development of each student’s style.

Course Outcomes
At the completion of the course the students should be able to:

  • create watercolor paintings successfully using the principles of art (balance, emphasis, variety, graduation, movement, proportion, harmony, and unity) to organize the elements of art (color, line, texture, shape, and space);
  • control the medium of watercolor using various techniques learned from demonstration and practice;
  • communicate chosen concepts, first in gray value sketches and then in watercolor paints;
  • discuss the center of interest, style, and techniques in contemporary and historical paints by other artists;
  • create a center of interest, use learned watercolor techniques, and develop one’s own style in paintings;
  • orally critique works of other students as to techniques, elements, and principles of art, including success in reaching goals attempted;
  • analyze one’s own works as to elements and principles and techniques used, freshness or muddiness, creativeness;
  • comfortably use drawing and watercolor terminology both during the working process and critiques;
  • understand and use the different approaches to transparent watercolor painting from oil or other opaque painting;
  • paint on a smaller scale (1/4 sheet of watercolor paper- 11”x15”) and on a larger scale (Yz sheet of watercolor paper - 15”x22”);
  • paint on cold pressed (slight textured paper) and on hot pressed (smooth paper); and
  • measure and cut a professional mat and mount a finished watercolor painting in the mat so it is picture-frame ready.
