EN 206 - Oral Interpretation of Literature


Credit Hours: 3

An experiential course that introduces the skills of literary analysis for the purpose of oral interpretive performance. Of equal importance, the course will endeavor to balance written analytic skills with vocal development and practical performance techniques. Students will explore analysis and performance aspects of prose, poetry, and dramatic literature, as well as the skills of adapting and staging material for group performance.

Fulfills SUNY General Education – Humanities.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • demonstrate, through written work and oral discussion, an understanding of oral interpretive performance;
  • demonstrate, through written work and oral discussion, a knowledge of the uses and types of discourse, literary and artistic foundations appropriate to the specific topic; and
  • do a research paper utilizing and analyzing primary and secondary sources concerning the oral interpretation of literature. Student should demonstrate the ability to make critical judgments about literature, art and historical data. The project may be done as a paper, or presented orally, in the spirit of the class.
