PS 101 - Skills for Effective Parenting Credit Hours: 3
Through lecture and group interaction on areas of common concern, the course will provide the parent/student with the awareness and skills necessary to function as an effective parent in a variety of situations and circumstances. Special emphasis will be given to women as single parents and students as parents.
Fulfills SUNY General Education – Social Sciences.
Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course the student will have demonstrated:
- an understanding of goal setting;
- an overview of developmental issues;
- an understanding of communication, true management, discipline methods, alternatives to corporal punishment, cooperation, self-esteem building, encouragement, natural and logical consequences, reflective listening, etc.;
- an understanding of contemporary issues in child rearing, i.e. sexuality, substance abuse, day care, diversity, etc.; and
- an ability to apply the classroom material in real life situations with children.
