BT 221 - Industrial Microbiology Laboratory


Credit Hours: 1.5

Applying the theory given in lecture course BT 220 Industrial Microbiology, BT 221 Industrial Microbiology Laboratory students explore the metabolic processes, cultivation and isolation of microorganisms used in biomanufacturing and food processing industries. Students will understand the positive and negative impact microorganisms have in these industries. To be taken as a co-requisite to BT 220.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • apply aspects of microbiology applicable to manufacturing and quality control in the biomanufacturing and food industries;
  • apply microbial fermentation process to produce food products such as yogurt, sauerkraut, wine and beer;
  • operate various laboratory equipment and instruments;
  • document the results of laboratory exercises accurately through laboratory reports and laboratory notebooks in accordance with the scientific journal style;
  • analyze data from laboratory exercises as part of the scientific report.
