CA 140 - Introduction to Mass Media


Credit Hours: 3.0

This course introduces the student to mass communications theory and history and to present areas of opportunities in journalism, radio, television, and film.  The course will also discuss the political, ethical nad practical problems of mass communications in a democratic society.  Lecture and discussion will be supplemented by visitis with various local media organizaitons and people.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • define basic communication theories and models;
  • define attributes of mass communication;
  • demonstrate knowledge of the history and development of mass communication;
  • explicate political, ethical, economic and practical problems of mass communication in a democratic society;
  • demonstrate knowledge of mass media technology and its effects;
  • design and execute a mass communication research study;
  • apply appropriate quantitative analysis to data; and
  • demonstrate how mass media affects and is affected by demographic variables.
