DH 181 - Lab for DH 180

Credit Hours: 1

Practical application of the knowledge gained in DH 180 will include supplemental intra-oral techniques and panoramic radiography. Hands-on training in identification of anatomical landmarks, dental caries, calculus and commonly used restorative dental materials as seen on intra-oral and panoramic films and digital images. Minimum passing grade is “C-.”

Course Outcomes
At the completion of the course, the student should be able to demonstrate competency in the following areas:

apply principles of professional, legal and ethical conduct, along with effective professional communication skills in all interactions with patients, peers, and other health care professionals;
utilize descriptive terminology as it relates to dental radiographs;
identify and describe normal tooth anatomy and supporting structures as viewed on intraoral films or panoramic films;
differentiates abnormalities, artifacts or foreign objects viewed on a radiograph;
identify and describe the radiographic appearance of dental caries utilizing the radiographic classification of caries;
identify and describe the radiographic appearance of commonly used restorative materials;
describe periodontal disease as it appears radiographically utilizing AAPR criteria;
identify trauma, pulpal and periapical lesions as seen on a radiograph;
apply Infection Control Protocol to prevent cross contamination of equipment, films and instruments in a clinical environment;
utilize supplemental intraoral techniques;
incorporates quality assurance tests into a working office procedural policy; and
produces duplicate radiographs of satisfactory quality.

Prerequisites: All required first-semester courses in the Dental Hygiene curriculum must be passed.
Corequisites: All required second-semester courses in the Dental Hygiene curriculum.
