EN 112 - Literary Theory & Composition

Credit Hours: 3

A course designed to further develop students’ critical thinking and advanced writing skills through the study of three genres of fiction (poetry, prose, drama) and intensive literary theory. Students will study a selection of works and approach them through various schools of critical thought/literary theories such as Marxist, Feminist, and Psychoanalytic theory. Several essays and a research project will be required.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

identify basic elements of all three genres of fiction;
demonstrate knowledge of major literary theories and how to accurately apply them, through essays and class discussion;
apply literary theories to specific works of literature, using critical thinking skills with logical analysis and the avoidance of common fallacies;
locate valid scholarly sources for literary research, and synthesize the material into a coherent argument in the form of an essay; and
produce a scholarly argument that contains valid research.
