CH 223 - Organic Chemistry II Laboratory


Credit Hours: 1.0

An advanced procedures and preparations course in organic techniques utilizing single and multi-step methods of synthesis, subsequent purification techniques, and an introduction to infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. handle air-sensitive materials;       
  2. predict structural properties of organic compounds from spectral data;                  
  3. identify classes of organic compounds using wet chemical techniques;             
  4. oxidize alcohols to ketones and acids;
  5. synthesize esters;
  6. perform saponifications;
  7. set up and perform fermentations and isolate products;
  8. prepare fluorescent dyes;
  9. synthesize diazonium salts and react them with various substrates;
  10. dehydrate alcohols and elucidate products;
  11. prepare triphenylmethanol via Grignard reagents;
  12. run Freidel-Crafts reactions; and
  13. synthesize components of insect repellents.
