CO 185 - Principles of Mechanics

Credit Hours: 3

A basic course in statics and strength of materials. The first half of this course includes basic principles of statics, force systems, centroids, center of gravity, and moments of inertia of areas. An introduction to the basic concepts of structural steel and structural wood design.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. investigate and determine simple planer vector forces graphically and algebraically;
  2. investigate and determine reactions of simply supported beams;
  3. identify, analyze, and solve technical problems;
  4. understand basic principles of statics, force systems, and moments of inertia; and
  5. investigate and determine simple wood-spanning elements from tables and formulas.
