CS 101 - Computer Literacy


Credit Hours: 3

The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of computers. It will expose the student to an operating system; the use of computers in our lives; computer components and software applications including word processors, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, e-mail, and the Internet. This course is intended to provide general computer literacy and basic information management. It may be used as a liberal arts elective. It cannot be used as a computer science requirement or an elective in the computer science curriculum.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. use computer equipment and terminology;
  2. use operating system commands;
  3. identify and solve simple hardware and software problems;
  4. use the computer to solve problems;
  5. use computer application software to promote the student’s academic success;
  6. receive and send e-mail messages, both with and without attachments;
  7. use a Web browser to navigate and search the Internet; and
  8. demonstrate an awareness of the effect of computers on individual’s lives and society as a whole.
