ES 209 - Mechanics of Materials

Credit Hours: 3

A course in the study of strength and elasticity of materials, stresses, and strains; deflection of beams and shafts; torsion and buckling of columns.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. determine tensile and compressive stress and strain in axially loaded members and structures;
    1. draw free body diagrams;
    2. understand stress-strain diagrams and related terminology;
    3. understand and use formulas to compute forces, normal stress and strain, and shear stress and strain. Calculate stress, and strain;
    4. analyze thermal effects on stress and strain; and
    5. analyze indeterminate structures using compatibility conditions.
  2. analyze members subjected to torsion;
    1. determine torsional deformation in a circular bar;
    2. calculate power transmission; and
    3. calculate strain energy in torsion and pure shear.
  3. analyze shear force and bending moments in beams;
    1. determine reactions at supports and shear force and moment along the beam;
    2. graph shear force and moment diagrams;
    3. determine the curvature of a beam, neutral axis, and moment of inertia; and
    4. calculate normal stress and shear stress in beams subjected to bending moment.
  4. analyze stress and strain;
    1. compute principal stresses, maximum shear stresses; and
    2. draw and interpret Mohr’s circle for plane stress and strain.
  5. calculate stresses in spherical and cylindrical pressure vessels;
  6. determine the deflection of a beam under concentrated loads and distributed loads; and
    1. obtain beam deflection by integration of the bending-moment equation;
    2. obtain beam deflection by integration of the shear-force and load equations; and
    3. obtain beam deflection by the method of superposition, moment-area method, and the application of Castigliano’s Theorem.
  7. determine the critical buckling loads for columns under various types of supports.
