IT 250 - Coordinate Measuring Machine

Credit Hours: 2

Provides students with a thorough understanding of coordinate metrology. The emphasis is on geometric measurement and inspection techniques as they pertain to a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). This course also covers the construction, calibration, operation, and maintenance of CMMs.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. identify quadrants and be able to make measurements and calculations relative to the Cartesian coordinate system;
  2. plot various X&Y coordinates on graph paper;
  3. using the CMM and a sample part, demonstrate the ability to:
    1. translate the part coordinate system in the X, Y&Z axis;
    2. rotate the part coordinate system in the X, Y&Z axis; and
    3. store and recall the part coordinate system.
  4. explain and define machine coordinates and part coordinates;
  5. identify measurement planes for various features on a CMM test piece;
  6. using the CMM and a sample part, demonstrate the ability to:
    1. display machine coordinates;
    2. recall precious measured features and establish a part coordinate system; and
    3. recognize an incomplete coordinate system.
  7. define various geometric features;
  8. using the CMM and a sample part, demonstrate the ability to measure each of the geometric features;
  9. explain how geometric dimensioning and tolerancing is a dimensioning system that thoroughly defines a part;
  10. list advantages of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing;
  11. demonstrate how datums are established using a CMM;
  12. demonstrate proper technique for hard probe calibration;
  13. demonstrate proper technique for touch probe calibration;
  14. explain the differences between mechanical and air bearing systems and the function of both;
  15. identify at least four materials utilized in the construction of CMM’s;
  16. use proper cleaning techniques and solvents for various parts of a CMM; and
  17. properly and safely use a CMM to accurately measure part features to print specifications.
