ML 216 - Immunohematology I


Credit Hours: 2

A course which presents current concepts in transfusion medicine, including the characteristics of major blood groups; compatibility testing; hemolytic disease of the newborn; the collection, processing and storage of blood and components; the testing and quality control procedures required prior to the release of blood and components for transfusion and the complications which may result from transfusion. 

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify blood group genetics, characteristics of the blood group systems, and the principles of immunology as they relate to immunohematology. (C, TL I, PC 4)
  2. Apply the knowledge of immunology and complement to testing performed in the process of blood product transfusions. (C, TL II, PC 4)
  3. Describe the donor requirements, preparation method, and storage requirements used to meet regulatory and quality standards by the FDA and AABB. (C, TL III, PC 4)
