ML 219 - Clinical Microbiology I Lab


Credit Hours: 1

Clinical Microbiology I is an introductory clinical microbiology laboratory course emphasizing the hospital laboratory, technical skills and the theory of basic clinical microbiology procedures.  Laboratory methods include the Gram stain procedure, preparation of culture media, aseptic technique, collection and handling of microbiological specimens, and isolation and identification of pathogens from the upper respiratory tract, urinary tract, genital tract and intestinal tract.  Basic procedures for culture and classification of medically significant fungi are also included.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate Laboratory Safety. (P, TL II, PC 2)
  2. Identify Bacterial Cell Morphology using a Microscope. (P, TL I, PC 4, 5, 6)
  3. Prepare and Utilize Tube and Plated Media. (P, TL II, PC 4, 5, 6)
  4. Utilize Aseptic Technique to Prepare and Examine Bacterial Cultures. (P, TL II, PC 4, 5, 6)
  5. Produce Bacterial Smears to Stain using Various Staining Techniques. (P, TL III, PC 4, 5, 6)
  6. Compare and Contrast Methods of Microbial Growth Control. (C, TL I, PC 4, 5, 6)
  7. Clinical Microbiology Testing - Upper Respiratory Tract and the Genitourinary Tract (P, IL III, PC 4, 5, 6 )
  8. Observe and Describe Various Fungal Specimens. (P, TL I, PC 4, 5, 6 )
  9. Determine the appropriate tests needed and Identify an Unknown Bacterial Specimen as found in Human Disease. (P, TL II, PC 4, 5, 6)
