MA 215 - Electronic Medical Records Management Credit Hours: 2
Using a Microsoft Windows environment and MEDENT electronic medical records software, students will learn the capabilities of a medical practice management program. Databases of patients, procedures, diagnoses, referring physicians, claim centers, and service facilities will be created and maintained. Students will use the MEDENT v. 23 Cloud TLS Practice Management system to schedule appointments and procedures, create, route, and prioritize triage messages, reference emails, and to-do lists, and manage electronic medical records (EMR), including documents, results, reports, and correspondence. Students will use the EMR to create progress notes to document the chief complaints, vital signs, medications, allergies, vaccinations, immunizations, and personal, family, and social medical histories; enter and utilize health insurance and pharmacy information; prepare prescriptions and x-ray/lab orders; and e-bill using proper ICD-10-CM and CPT-4-PC codes, adding appropriate diagnostic codes to a problem list. Students will also learn to prepare day sheets for end-of-day reconciliation, use the patient portal, and identify the role of the medical assistant in telehealth.
Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- create and maintain patient charts within an electronic medical record using the MEDENT system;
- identify different types of appointment scheduling methods within the EMR and discuss their advantages and disadvantages;
- differentiate between electronic medical records (EMR) and a practice management system (PMS);
- identify EHR regulations, including ARRA, HIPAA, HITECH, MACRA, MIPS, and Promoting Interoperability;
- create, route, and prioritize triage messages, reference emails, to-do lists, documents, results, reports, and correspondence to other healthcare personnel;
- enter and utilize health insurance and pharmacy information;
- create progress notes to document the chief complaints, vital signs, medications, allergies, vaccinations, immunizations, and personal, family, and social medical histories;
- prepare prescriptions and x-ray/lab orders;
- identify proper e-billing procedures using proper ICD-10-CM and CPT-4-PC codes, add appropriate diagnostic codes to a problem list, and generate reports;
- prepare day sheets for end-of-day reconciliation;
- identify the role of the medical assistant in telehealth and use of the patient portal;
- manage patient electronic medical records including organization, maintaining, storing, and filing; and
- develop a disaster recovery plan for possible loss of access to an EMR.

This course is required for the Medical Assisting AAS Degree and 100% of the Psychomotor and Affective competencies need to be passed. Reminder: To be eligible for an Associate in Applied Science degree in Medical Assisting, students must attain a C average or better in all MA courses.
