PB 202 - Basic Law for Police


Credit Hours: 4

Basic Law for Police will provide students with an in-depth review of the New York State Penal Law. Emphasis will be placed on recognition, retention, and understanding of the elements of offenses contained in the law. Instruction will also include a review of definitions, culpability, and defenses.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. recognize the geographical jurisdiction of the offenses;
  2. identify types and jurisdictions of criminal courts;
  3. define criminal justice terminology;
  4. identify elements of an offense;
  5. identify levels of culpable mental states necessary for criminal responsibility;
  6. identify the difference between motive and intent; and
  7. identify the elements required for criminal responsibility.
