TE 232 - Electronics II


Credit Hours: 3

The course is a study of electronic communications systems. Systems studied include electronic filters, timers, oscillators, modulators, mixers, converters, and amplifiers. Their applications are further examined within communications as modulators, multiplexers, A to D and D to A converters, antennas, and transmission lines and in data transmission. Communication over free-space, wired, and optical media are studied. Analog, digital, linear, and non-linear methods are examined. Input/output relationships are observed through hardware and software labs.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. use software and hardware to build, measure, and troubleshoot electronic communication circuits;
  2. analyze the operation of low pass, high pass, band pass, and band stop filters;
  3. become proficient in constructing and testing filter circuits;
  4. demonstrate capability in explaining oscillator concepts as they apply to communications;
  5. gain proficiency in traditional electronic modulation techniques including AM, FM, and pulse modulation;
  6. assemble a simple amplitude modulator;
  7. understand high-level digital modulation techniques for contemporary communications;
  8. possess knowledge of multiplexing and timing concepts;
  9. demonstrate an understanding of the principles and applications of phase-locked loops, oscillators, AtoD/DtoA converters, and mixers;
  10. build a phase-locked loop to match Instructor specifications;
  11. specify transmission lines by application; and
  12. select antennas based on signal radio frequency characteristics.
