EL 116 - Digital Fundamentals


Credit Hours: 2

This course will provide an introduction to digital electronics and cover the following digital fundamentals: Logic Gates such as AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR, Exclusive OR, and Exclusive NOR; Logic circuits; Boolean Arithmetic and Boolean algebra; logic circuit design; decoders and multiplexers; number systems and codes; arithmetic functions.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. perform calculations and base conversions in the binary, decimal, and hexadecimal number system;
  2. relate logic diagrams to Boolean expressions, truth tables, and state tables;
  3. analyze combinational logic circuits;
  4. identify and explain the behavior of combinational circuits including encoders, decoders, arithmetic circuits, multiplexers, and demultiplexers; and
  5. identify and use appropriate technical literature for the research assignment.
