CA 205 - Interpersonal Communication Credit Hours: 3
This course explores the ways that communication works in the real world and how it influences our relationships, sense of self, understanding of culture and society, and how we feel we fit into the world. Topics include verbal communication, non-verbal communication, self-concept, conflict resolution, and personal relationships. This course will deal with communication issues including gender, race, culture, social structures and power.
Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- define the four basic types of communication;
- delineate the standard models and theories of interpersonal communication;
- analyze interpersonal context and its variables;
- create communication strategies based on context;
- differentiate between and select situation-appropriate verbal and nonverbal language;
- read and summarize research articles in the field;
- read basic statistical analysis;
- apply the principles of interpersonal communications to real-world situations; and
- differentiate between cultural and gender-related communication practices.
