CO 147 - Introduction to Shielded Metal Arch Welding / Stick Welding


Credit Hours: 3

This course is an introductory class to shielded metal-arch welding/stick welding (SMAW). Topics covered will include material preparation, machine setup and safety, welding terminology, welding positions, and spotting weld defects. Students will experience hands-on lab work.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. make multiple pass welds in all positions;
  2. present information and ideas about specific types of weld joints as well as their structural application effectively in various contexts and formats, both written and oral;
  3. prepare, test, and evaluate guided bend test specimens;
  4. make code quality welds on plate;
  5. properly use and apply mathematical welding formulas; and
  6. read and interpret welding blueprints.
