CA 285 - Introduction to Film

Credit Hours: 3

A survey of important works since the advent of film. Assigned films may be foreign or U.S. productions. Course may focus on the language, history and dynamics of film.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

identify and describe a wide range of shots;
accurately assess the precise relationship of the camera to the subject;
identify and describe standard editing practices;
identify sound elements in cinematic language;
recognize patterns of narrative;
identify major film genres;
use cinematic terms in written analysis of film; and
distinguish diegetic and non-diegetic elements in film narrative.
