MA 213 - Introduction to Electronic Health Records (EHR) Credit Hours: 2
This course introduces students to the standards and features of an EHR system using the MEDENT Electronic Health Record (EHR) Practice Management System (PMS) to learn various medical practice management applications, administrative procedures and practice finance applications. Students will learn to create patient charts, enter insurance information, schedule appointments and procedures, generate, route, and prioritize triage messages, produce superbills, and post payments and adjustments. Students also learn to perform accounts receivable procedures, end-of-day reconciliations and other billing and bookkeeping practices as they relate to managed care.
Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify components of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Practice Management System (PMS)
- Identify different types of appointment scheduling methods and manage new and established patient appointment schedules
- Identify and use critical information to schedule appointments
- Create, route and prioritize triage messages
- Enter insurance and billing information into the Electronic Health Record (EHR)
- Recognize the importance of EHR data back-up to ensure information integrity and safeguard patient care
- Perform accounts receivable procedures relative to patient accounts
- Identify precautions for accepting various types of payments
- Perform end-of-day reconciliations
- Identify bookkeeping terms and perform accounts receivable procedures to patient accounts including charges, payments and adjustments, and recognize procedures regarding non-sufficient funds (NSF) checks, collection agency transactions, credit balances and third party transactions

This course is required for the Medical Assisting AAS Degree and 100% of the Psychomotor and Affective competencies need to be passed.
Reminder: To be eligible for an Associate in Applied Science degree in Medical Assisting, students must attain a C average or better in all MA courses
