PE 243 - Personal Training for Special Populations


Credit Hours: 3

This course is designed to introduce students to a variety of common medical conditions and illnesses encountered during personal training. Students will review physiologic processes that lead to conditions and gain a thorough understanding of disease processes and associated limitations. Basic program design methods will be reviewed, and students will adapt them to case studies throughout the course to create safe and effective personal training programs for a variety of special populations. This course will benefit those pursuing further education in Exercise Science, Physical Therapy, or Personal Training. This course requires PE 143 as a prerequisite and will serve as an open college elective for the Health and Wellness Promotion-Exercise Science Concentration.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. design exercise programs utilizing case studies involving cardiovascular and resistance training for a variety of populations using appropriate modality, intensity, frequency, and duration to elicit the desired health or fitness response; 
  2. describe pathology associated with various, or special considerations and recognize programming needs and considerations, preadolescent, older adults, pregnancy, obesity, low back pain, metabolic syndrome, etc.; and  
  3. identify contraindications during exercise while working with various, or special populations and recognize when to limit activity or when cessation of physical activity is necessary.
