IT 105 - Exploring Today’s Workforce


Credit Hours: 3

This course will explore the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice statements of various local manufacturers. Company profiles and statements will be reviewed in class. Several plant tours will provide a look at how local manufacturing handles these topics in the 21st century.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. critically analyze diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice statements provided by companies through their websites;
  2. identify the language, tone, and potential gaps in diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice statements, assessing their authenticity and commitment to DEISJ principles;
  3. demonstrate their research skills by effectively navigating corporate websites to locate and evaluate diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice statements;
  4. explore the intersectionality of various social identities, such as race, gender, sexuality, ability, and socioeconomic status, within the context of corporate environments;
  5. analyze how DEISJ initiatives intersect with broader issues of power, privilege, and systemic oppression within organizations;
  6. gain firsthand experience of organizational culture, practices, and physical environments;
  7. assess the alignment between the DEISJ statements and the observed practices and culture during the company visit, identifying areas of congruence or discrepancy;
  8. develop the ability to articulate their analyses and findings effectively, both in written form and through oral presentations; and
  9. engage in constructive dialogue and debate regarding DEISJ issues, fostering a collaborative and inclusive learning environment.
