CT 120 - Introduction to Automotive Systems


Credit Hours: 5

This lecture/lab course will introduce students to the foundational knowledge and skills that are necessary for employment in an automotive collision facility.  Topics will include basic vehicle inspections, basic vehicle maintenance and repair, lifting and jacking, tool usage, lighting system basics, battery and harness inspection, and air conditioning damage inspection with basic evacuation and recharge procedures.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. demonstrate the proper procedures to remove and replace wheels from a vehicle, including proper torquing methods;
  2. visually identify various hand tools and shop equipment. Describe the proper use and required maintenance of industry tools;
  3. demonstrate proper use of vehicle lifting equipment;
  4. complete vehicle fluid maintenance using proper techniques as highlighted in service information;
  5. evaluate battery and major wiring harness damage to be used in an accurate repair estimate;
  6. replace exterior lighting assemblies, bulbs, batteries, and other minor exterior electrical components;
  7. perform proper and safe basic replacement procedures concerning restraint systems. Including airbags, pre-tensioners, and seat belts; and
  8. utilize multiple Air Conditioning service tools and service information to properly reclaim, recycle, and recharge the refrigerant in automotive air conditioning systems.
