CW 201 - Cross Cultural Communication Competency


Credit Hours: 3

This course will examine the aspects of cross-cultural communication in healthcare.  Effective communication is crucial for patient compliance and successful healthcare outcomes. Through a series of lectures, case studies, and media, students will be instructed in diversity concepts and social justice issues. They will apply learned strategies to overcome barriers to equality in health care and society for all people.  These strategies will be applied to diverse population needs, and are necessary for successful communication, as well as implementation of health promotion programs.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. exhibit understanding of diversity, social inequality, and cultural practices of special populations;
  2. identify and overcome challenges, cultural beliefs, and biases to effective communication and improve health literacy;
  3. develop and assess health communication using diverse resources, models, and points of view; and
  4. effectively collaborate with the patient and health care team.
