MA 229 - Professionalism in the Medical Office Credit Hours: 3
This course is designed to help the student develop confidence in communicating with patients, office personnel and others in the medical setting. Principles of communication and communication theory and professionalism are presented from various viewpoints. Human relations, as they affect the medical assistant, are presented and discussed. Interpersonal relationships the medical assistant encounters in the office situation are explored. Medical assisting students learn principles of initiating, developing, maintaining and terminating relationships with patients and apply these skills while in the office setting during their externship. Preparation for the American Association of Medical Assistants certification examination is facilitated through an introduction of examination review books.
Course Outcomes At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
- identify the significance of professionalism in the medical office;
- demonstrate an understanding of professional training and the hierarchy concept;
- recognize the importance of attitudes, values, beliefs and self-concept in professional development;
- demonstrate principles of soft-skill and diversity training in the medical office;
- identify the American Association of Medical Assistant (AAMA) professional organization; and
- create an employment portfolio.
Prerequisites: All courses listed for the first three semesters, or equivalent with permission of instructor or permission of MA program director. Corequisites: MA 220,EG 009, and PS 100. Concurrent Registration: MA 221 and MA 223 F/S (N)
