Program Description

The Office Technology curriculum prepares students to become professional administrative assistants. Graduates possess mastery of office skills and a wide knowledge of contemporary business practices and techniques. They are capable of assuming responsibility without direct supervision, are able to assist executives in daily business operations and can make decisions within the scope of their authority.

Specific courses will be offered in language arts and communication skills; computer concepts, applications and office/administrative procedures. Training will be conducted on state-of-the-art equipment and software.

For students desiring on-the-job experience prior to graduation, an internship course may be available.

Through this program, individuals may prepare for Civil Service tests, Microsoft Office Specialist tests and Certified Professional Secretary tests.

Program Competencies

Upon graduation with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Office Technology, the graduate will be able to:

  • Analyze, classify, record and summarize financial transactions, applying fundamental accounting principles
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the computer and keyboarding equipment to produce and format documents
  • Utilize current software programs for word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheets and databases
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the communication process and its role in verbal and nonverbal interpersonal communication
  • Develop oral communication skills necessary to conduct business transactions that occur over the telephone and in person in a professional manner
  • Develop written communication skills essential for completing critical office tasks
  • Develop communication skills essential for securing an office position
  • Transcribe letters, reports and other documents from various methods of input, including office-style dictation, to produce mailable copy with acceptable grammar, correct punctuation and proper layout
  • Keyboard at 45 net words per minute
  • Keyboard and format office documents from rough draft copy
  • Perform basic arithmetic operations, with or without a calculator
  • Apply basic arithmetic functions to business problems
  • Demonstrate problem-solving abilities by applying technical skills to office situations

In order to be granted an associate degree, a student must demonstrate proficiency in algebra at the level of MT 006.
