Program Description
The Engineering Science Program at Erie Community College is an alternative to the first two years of a baccalaureate engineering program at a large four-year university. Classes at the North Campus are small and, in this intimate setting, learning is greatly enhanced. The personal attention, small classes and continual guidance are important factors in students’ success at ECC. This two-year Engineering Science Program is designed to qualify students for transfer to a four-year engineering program.
The Engineering Science curriculum includes courses in English, social science, advanced mathematics, physics and chemistry. Within this program, students will also take certain prescribed engineering courses and elect others, depending on the requirements of the four-year engineering school of their choice. These required courses have been designed to facilitate transfer to baccalaureate engineering programs.
Graduates of this program continue their engineering education at four-year colleges and universities. Many attend other SUNY institutions such as SUNY at Buffalo and SUNY at Binghamton, while others attend private universities, including Rochester Institute of Technology, Clarkson University, University of Detroit, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Kettering University and Syracuse University. Students opt for degrees in many types of engineering, including aeronautical engineering, ceramic engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering and metallurgical engineering. If students have the appropriate grade average and courses, they can transfer into these aforementioned programs as juniors.
Program Competencies
Upon graduation with an Associate in Science degree in Engineering Science, the graduate will be able to:
- enter, with junior standing, one of many engineering colleges, provided grades are acceptable;
- attack problems and solve them in the traditional engineering fashion of “given-find-solution”;
- utilize developed math skills and physical concepts for problem solving;
- use the computer as a tool to help in problem solving;
- conduct and write laboratory tests/experiments in a thorough fashion using proper communications skills;
- develop an appreciation of the non-technical, human aspects of engineering;
- recognize the difference between a technician, technologist and an engineer; and
- appreciate and have an interest in literature.
Curriculum
Total Degree Credits: 66.5
Students must consult with his/her academic adviser prior to registering each semester. Students planning on transferring to four-year engineering programs should take specific additional courses listed in the Transfer Course section that are geared towards their engineering discipline of choice.
