Program Description

Computers have revolutionized every facet of American life. From computerized billing systems to automatic tellers, the advancement of computerized devices has created the need for competent technicians to service this modern technology.

The Computer Repair Technology curriculum is designed to provide the knowledge and skills required in the maintenance and repair of computer equipment and systems. In this curriculum, students learn basic electronics, semiconductor applications, integrated circuits, digital logic, and computer repair. Troubleshooting of individual logic devices and computer systems completes the students’ study. Graduates of this curriculum are qualified to maintain all types of computer hardware, isolate and diagnose computer system breakdowns, etc.

Computer Repair Technology graduates may pursue careers in field service, manufacturing, engineering,  sales, or technical writing.

Special Admission Requirements/Prerequisites

Applicants should have three units of high school mathematics (including trigonometry and intermediate algebra) and two units of high school science (physics is preferred).

Scholarships

The Albert Adams Memorial Scholarship: Monetary amounts to be presented annually to students on the basis of need and academic achievement.

Program Competencies

  • Use the resistor color code and component recognition.
  • Demonstrate electronic soldering and terminating wire connections using solderless type connectors.
  • Demonstrate using electronic test instrumentation dual trace scopes, frequency counters and function generators.
  • Demonstrate troubleshooting half-wave, full-wave and bridge power supplies
  • Student will be able to troubleshoot and repair voltage doublers.
  • Prototype multistage analog and digital circuits, check these circuits for normal operation and design, and construct circuit boards for these circuits.
  • Design, construct and test digital logic circuits to meet the demands of any four input logic circuits.
  • Demonstrate basic theory and architecture of computer systems.
  • Interact with a computer system to assess its performance.
  • Disassemble and reassemble mechanical components of computer systems and adjust for proper operation.
  • Isolate system malfunction by relating program execution to specific groups of circuits.
  • Use system software to generate, operate and maintain program logos to identify failed system components.
  • Demonstrate power system operation.
  • Isolate data communications system faults to specific subsystems.
