Program Description

The Green Building Technology Certificate Program courses will highlight building construction methods that include: conservation techniques, environmental awareness in material reuse and energy efficient mechanical systems.

Greening the building sector can be accomplished with existing technology that typically offers an outstanding return on investment. The energy efficiency sector encompasses a wide range of activities including: green building design and construction; renovation and retrofitting of existing buildings; energy management and the manufacturing of products needed for these activities.

The students will also utilize the newest technology for hands-on systems testing of buildings and their mechanical systems. Related elements of the program will provide student lab stations that will consider both HVAC system efficiency and water consumption and conservation, as well as the latest technology for domestic hot water systems.

Some of the educational principles for the green HVAC systems and plumbing systems laboratory courses include: energy consumptions of systems; conservation of water resources; HVAC operations and installation methods; systems design and load calculations; building analysis; systems troubleshooting; and new technology and materials.

The final program element will involve sustainable construction methods for new and existing structures that use both sustainable green materials and recycled materials. These buildings used as training sites will require a holistic building analysis to provide documentation for the Energy Star standard.

All of the program courses would be based on the five main categories of the LEED Green Building Certification: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources and indoor environmental quality.

Special Admission Requirements/Prerequisites

  • Student should either have Level B Math, or be at a minimum of the MT-006 level.
  • Student should possess a general knowledge of Environmental Science.

Program Competencies

Upon completion of the Green Building Technology certificate, students will be able to:

  • understand renewable systems operations;
  • access environmental issues associated with both traditional and renewable fuels;
  • apply thermodynamic principles associated with heat transfer;
  • select material, resource and systems to minimize the environmental impact in the building and facilities industries;
  • access environmental issues associated with both traditional and renewable fuels;
  • demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of green, clean and sustainable technology as they relate to the built environment;
  • have a working knowledge of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system; and
