Program Description
The Emergency Medical Services Provider Certificate Program is designed for both the career and volunteer provider.
This new certificate will require students to complete the SUNY general education courses which are available at all campuses. This certificate will also ensure that the student completes core development courses in math, science, humanities, social science, EMT and other fields to be better rounded students and lifelong learners.
The Emergency Medical Services Provider certificate, in conjunction with successful completion of the Paramedic certificate, will enable the student to receive a SUNY Associate of Applied Science degree.

- New York State Health Department, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, Basic Emergency Medical Technician
Special Admission Requirements/Prerequisites
- Individuals must be 18 years old to receive New York State EMT certification.
- Applicants must be physically fit in order to provide pre-hospital emergency medical care.
- Applicants must not have any felony convictions or current charges.
Program Competencies
Upon completion of EMT course or courses, the graduate will prove competency in those skills pertinent to his/her level of training as indicated below: (See notes for explanation.)
- Introduction Demonstrate a principal understanding of the content, ranging from but not limited to medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, and techniques for lifting and moving patients related to the Emergency Medical Technology services.
- Airway Management Demonstrate fundamental didactic knowledge & technical competence to manage airway complications.
- Patient Assessment Demonstrate fundamental didactic & technical competence for conducting a patient assessment.
- Medicine Demonstrate fundamental didactic knowledge & technical competence to manage medical emergencies, to include but not limited to medication administration, cardiac defibrillation.
- Trauma/Shock/Resuscitation Demonstrate fundamental didactic knowledge & technical competence to manage patients with traumatic injuries.
- Special Patient Populations Demonstrate fundamental didactic knowledge & technical competence to manage special populations to include pediatrics, geriatrics, bariatric & technology dependent patients (ie. to include but not limited to ventilators, tracheostomies).
- EMS Operations Demonstrate a principal knowledge of the role of EMS operations.
