Program Description

Graphic Communications Technology A.A.S. degree prepares students with the technical skills needed to produce a variety of products found in the field, transforming ideas into digital and print media. Topics will introduce the creative process and all of the steps in between to produce the final product. The degree develops strong computer skills using the current industry-standard software in addition to hands-on lab assignments incorporating traditional printing process, digital and wide format printing. The degree includes a capstone course, highlighting skills learned throughout the program, culminating in a strong portfolio that can be used to give an advantage when seeking employment after graduation. May include an opportunity for a job shadow or internship option. The program prepares students for entry-level positions in printing, publishing and related industries. 

To successfully complete the program, a candidate must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average in all departmental courses and a minimum overall Erie Community College GPA of 2.0.

Department Notes

Any student in this program, with or without reasonable accommodations, should be able to:

  • visually identify errors, color correction, or related proofing mistakes associated with various printing or design related functions;
  • stand, sit or walk for long periods of time to operate machinery such as a press, folder, cutter, computer, or other related press or bindery equipment; and
  • lift approximately 20-30 pounds for loading, unloading, or stacking of paper or related supplies.

Program Competencies

Upon graduation with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Graphic Communications Technology, the graduate will be able to:

  • use critical thinking to create and combine words, images and graphic elements to provide a visual representation of ideas and messages;
  • execute principles and elements of design with technical construction techniques;
  • evaluate and execute the steps needed to prepare a file, from pre-flighting through platemaking for the production of a successful printing project;
  • identify incoming files for any errors, prepare and assemble individual pages into a larger press sheet layout;
  • identify the types of offset printing machines that are commonly used, the steps and skills required to operate a press, and common binding and finishing procedures;
  • explore, experiment, and master skillsets in traditional disciplines and digital techniques. Identify emerging technology as it relates to the printing and related industries, the processes commonly used applications, and materials available; and
  • identify, evaluate and prepare for entry level employment opportunities in the field of graphic communications industry.

** Note: A Web Page Design Certificate is also available requiring specific Graphic and Liberal Arts courses.
