Program Description
The Office Assistant Certificate Program is for the student who wants to attain new skills or update skills. Training will be conducted on state-of-the-art equipment and software. The program is intended to prepare students for entry-level office positions in both the public and private sector. For students desiring on-the-job experience, an internship course may be available. A prior business background is not essential. Courses completed in the Office Assistant Program can be applied to an associate’s degree in Office Management or General Studies.
Program Competencies
Upon graduation with an Office Assistant certificate, the graduate will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of the computer and keyboarding equipment to produce and format documents for mailable copy;
- utilize current software programs for presentations, word processing, spreadsheets and databases;
- demonstrate an understanding of the communication process and its role in verbal and nonverbal interpersonal communications;
- develop communication skills essential for securing an office position;
- type at least 40 net words per minute;
- type and format office documents from rough draft copy;
- perform basic arithmetic operations, with or without a calculator;
- apply basic arithmetic functions to business problems; and
- demonstrate problem-solving abilities by applying technical skills to office situations.
