CO 137 - Material Cutting and Safety for Welders


Credit Hours: 3

This course includes topics on general welding safety, along with material cutting using Oxy-Fuel and Plasma-Arc cutting systems. Students will learn how to cut metal stock in varying thicknesses with emphases on straight, curved and bevel cuts. Students will also learn how to use the proper protective equipment, and how to practice personal safety regarding setup, use and proper machine maintenance. Students will experience hands-on lab work.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • safely setup and use Plasma-Arc and Oxy-Fuel systems;
  • present information and ideas about cutting operations effectively in various contexts and formats, both written and oral;
  • properly cut and finish metal stock of varying thicknesses using straight line, curve or bevel cuts using the appropriate equipment;
  • demonstrate knowledge of welding safety including, personal safety equipment, machine safety and shop safety;
  • recognize incorrect machine setup and damaged equipment;
  • perform a basic measuring check;
  • properly use and apply mathematical welding formulas; and
  • read and interpret welding blueprints.
