Program Description

The Engineering Science Program at SUNY Erie is an alternative to the first two years of a baccalaureate engineering program at a large four-year university. Classes at the North Campus are small and, in this intimate setting, learning is greatly enhanced. The personal attention, small classes and continual guidance are important factors in students’ success at SUNY Erie. This two-year Engineering Science Program is designed to qualify students for transfer to a four-year engineering program.

The Engineering Science curriculum includes courses in English, social science, advanced mathematics, physics and chemistry. Within this program, students will also take certain prescribed engineering courses designed to facilitate transfer to baccalaureate engineering programs.

Graduates of this program continue their engineering education at four-year colleges and universities. Many attend other SUNY institutions particularly SUNY at Buffalo, while others attend private universities, including Rochester Institute of Technology, Clarkson University, University of Detroit, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Kettering University and Syracuse University. Students opt for degrees in many types of engineering, including aeronautical engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, industrial engineering and mechanical engineering. If students have the appropriate grade average and courses, they can transfer into these aforementioned programs as juniors.

Program Competencies

Upon graduation with an Associate in Science degree in Engineering Science, the graduate will be able to:

  • apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering;
  • formulate and solve basic engineering problems with and without computers; and
  • perform experiments, analyze and interpret resulting data using computers, and write reports using proper communication skills.

  • American History
  • Foreign Language
  • Humanities
  • Other World Civilizations
  • Social Science
  • Western Civilization

To promote smooth transfer of SUNY Erie engineering science students to four year engineering institutions and also to accommodate specific changes in the curriculum at these institutions, the engineering science department may make adjustments to its curriculum by introducing new courses that might be specific to certain engineering disciplines. Consult with the academic adviser regarding the curriculum.
